Getting a sharp photo of this fast-moving Swallow at close range was only slightly easier than catching a bullet in my teeth .. GH2 using burst .. 1/4000 sec ISO 640

Taken on the beach at Scarborough where the Swallows were skimming the sand beside the sea-wall. The fast burst speed of the GH2 helped me get the odd “keeper” – 300mm lens at F2.8

That is very impressive! These beauts skim the lawns at a nearby country house that I’ve visited a couple of times and they look fantastic but it would never enter my head to have a go at getting a shot of one – I can’t even keep them in the viewfinder :-) What setting were you using for focus?

Hi Gordon, great result. I have attempted to get sharp, blur free pictures of Swallows in the past and given up in frustration. As Cluke said, keeping them in the viewfinder is hard enough. I assume you pre-focussed on a spot and used the burst mode as they flew through the spot.

Thanks both. Exactly right Gerry. I set the focus about 7 metres and hoped for the best. The closer you get – the lower the success rate. My main difficulty was predicting the flight path. Hirundines are great subjects and I do have have lots of other ideas … for example … Swallows taking a drink from the surface of a pond … watch this space

Well done Gordon a fantastic shot, full of patience i bet. I have been trying to get the bats in my garden for months as they have a regular flight path but the light or using a flash is proving a nightmare but i will prevail!!
