Southern Hawker
Taken in woodland at Allerthorpe Common in East Yorkshire - an excellent place for butterflies too. I used the GH2 and 100-300mm lens at full zoom, hand-held, 1/800 F5.6 ISO400

Hi Gordon, sorry to disagree with you, but I’m sure that’s a Southern Hawker. I posted a couple of photos of a Common Darter in my gallery a few days ago. Great shot though.
Cheers, Gerry.

Hi Gerry. I’m no expert, but I read this about the Southern Hawker today – which made me think mine was the “Common” …
This hawker is most easily confused with the Common Hawker, which is not quite as common as its name suggests. The male Southern Hawker has green and blue abdominal spots where as the Common Hawker has all blue spots, narrow antehumeral stripes and no yellow triangle on segment 2 of the abdomen.

Will check this out further Gerry – you may well be right ? Thanks.

Thanks again Gerry. My “Darter” was a typo – I meant to say Common Hawker – but now I realise that it IS a Southern Hawker .. cheers
