Just a-walkin the dogs ..
Phil Surbey's comments:
"What a great action shot! Gordon's done really well to freeze this moment in time. He's shown great technical ability and knowhow with the idea and setup of this shot, getting everything right from the viewpoint and the direction of the sun to the combining of his choice of focal length with a fixed focus position. He has also utilised a fast shutter speed to freeze the action, combined with a wide aperture – thus creating a shallow depth of field and helping to separate the dogs from the background – and then he’s got the timing of the shutter release spot on. Looking through Gordon's gallery, you can see his commitment to and love of photography throughout the whole year, which has helped him become the Panasonic Lumix Lifestyle Photographer of the Year. All in all, a fantastic winning image showing both technical and artistic ability."

My latest good photo is usually my favourite - until the next one comes along. A Bank Holiday walk with my daughter and her two dogs produced this image yesterday. For the competition, I wanted to submit an action photo and took this one with my new 100-300 mm zoom lens on the G1. I pre-focused on a point in the grasses beside the path and called her to let them go. They were flying! I released the shutter as they passed my point-of-focus. I am very impressed by this lens! Apart from cropping the picture to a more suitable (square) 1:1 format, it did not need any further edits - just the standard Raw development - without additional sharpening. A hand-held shot 1/1250 sec F5.5 ISO800 @ 280mm. I set NR+2 in the standard film mode - who says you cannot use a high ISO setting with the m4/3 camera?

Hi Gordon, could you just expand on:
“I set NR+2 in the standard film mode..”
I know you can set NR to ON for long exposures, but how did you get the noise reduction to operate given the fast shutter speed, presumably to reduce the noise as much as possible due to ISO 800?Or am I barking up the wrong tree?!

Would this excellent image have won if the title had been, “Coming to Get You!”?
